Residence Hall Living Living together in a residence hall, it is essential that each student make a special effort to be considerate of others. Loud stereos may disturb those who are trying to study or rest. Long showers may rob others of the opportunity to take a hot shower. Littering in the hallways or walking in the dorm with muddy cleats or shoes leaves a mess for other students to clean up. In short, when you live with other people, your actions affect more people than you imagine.
Dorm standards attempt to help you be considerate of others and to encourage you to use your time effectively. Following these rules makes our community a better place to live and grow. Other standards are dictated by the nature of our facilities and for safety.
Please do not be upset when dorm parents, prefects or others remind you that your actions are not helping others to achieve the above-mentioned goals. It is important that you do what you are asked to do by staff members and prefects, even if you feel, in the heat of the moment, that you are being treated unfairly. Refusing to cooperate only makes matters worse.
Trust (repeated under rooms below) Your dormitory room is your home away from home. The condition of your room is a reflection of you as a person and your sense of responsibility. You have a right to security of person and property, and should decide which other students enter your room. Therefore, no student is permitted in another student's dorm room unless a resident of that room is present and the non-resident is invited. You are responsible for the general condition of your room and furniture. Any damage to the room or furniture will be assessed to you, unless it is established that the damage was caused by others.
Dorm Inspections In a dorm situation, there are three infractions that can be seen in no other way except as crimes against the whole community and a breach of trust. These are safety violations, stealing, and vandalism. Committing any of these will result in serious consequences. (See "Discipline System" in this handbook). A dorm group attempts to create a sense of trust and unity--so each individual can feel comfortable to develop academic, physical and social potential. Consideration and trust are key elements in developing a good dorm living situation. Therefore, the community must respond to the student not supporting the trust and honor code of the community.
Rooms will be checked daily. Any discrepancies must be corrected during the afternoon break. If corrections are not made during the afternoon break, you will be restricted to your room for cleanup after dinner. You will be restricted to your room until the room complies with the outlined standards and has been checked by the dormitory parent or the prefect responsible. You may not leave campus on weekend school-sponsored activities or overnight leave if your room is not in compliance.

However, a search of your room may occur when a faculty or staff member has good reason to believe that a disciplinary infraction has occurred or potentially harmful material will be discovered. Present at a room search will be a school administrator, the dormitory parent, and the student whose room is being searched. Students may be given the opportunity to produce the material sought. The discovery of any item or material considered illegal or harmful will lead to disciplinary action. In emergency circumstances, or with the specific intention of locating contraband, a school administrator, or dorm parent may authorize searches of dormitories and rooms without the student's presence.
Telephones Each dormitory has phones for student use. It is the responsibility of each student to make sure the phones are not abused. They are available during your FREE TIME and must not be used during study hall or after lights out except in emergency situations. Be considerate of others who are waiting to use the phone. Long distance phone cards may be purchased in the Bookstore.
Lights Out Lights out means students should be in their room, in bed for the night with all lights out by 10:30 pm, and not roaming the halls or in the bathroom. Students will do a much better job in all of their work if they get a full night sleep.
Counseling Students should feel comfortable to seek help with personal problems by speaking with faculty, dorm parents or administrators. Students who would like to meet with a therapist may coordinate with the school nurse and their parents to arrange regular appointments with a visiting professional counselor.
Conversations with faculty may be confidential, however, any issue involving potentially harmful or criminal activities will be brought to the attention of the appropriate support person. Conversations with the nurse on health-related issues are confidential.
Standards and Expectations A student is expected to accept responsibility for his/her actions. A student is expected not to verbally or physically abuse any member of the Wasatch community, engage in sexual activity, drink alcohol or engage in any kind of substance abuse. Each student is considered and expected to be truthful, honest and trustworthy. Consequently, a student may anticipate that he or she will be trusted to behave responsibly when not under direct faculty supervision.
Public Display of Affection (P.D.A) Students are expected to be mindful of other people in keeping public displays of affection to a minimum. Holding hands and walking arm in arm are wholesome, courteous ways to demonstrate affection. Couples should not be embracing each other, nor lying together.

Because Wasatch Academy is committed to a vigorous and active anti-substance abuse policy, the school reserves the right to administer a breath analyzer test to any student suspected of alcohol use and to have a student take a drug test in case of suspected drug abuse.
A student seeking help with substance abuse problems on his/her own volition (not under the duress of accusation or suspicion of substance abuse) will be given, without prejudice, the assistance necessary to deal with the problem and will not be subjected to discipline. Each program of assistance varies with the specific needs of the student, but the student will be subjected to monitoring for further abuse. A student who has requested or accepted assistance but is unable to remain free from substance abuse will be subject to discipline, up to and including dismissal.

Allegations of sexual harassment brought to an administrator’s attention should be reported by that administrator to the Headmaster immediately. It is much easier to discuss, investigate and resolve such matters while the facts are still fresh in one's mind. If discussion of the subject with the administrator would be embarrassing, uncomfortable, or if the administrator is involved in the allegation, the individual is encouraged to go directly to the Headmaster. The school will take immediate action to investigate any such complaints thoroughly.
